Neighborhood Housing Services of Brooklyn (NHS Brooklyn) is a mission-driven nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening Brooklyn’s neighborhoods. By providing affordable housing opportunities, homeownership support, financial education, and foreclosure prevention services, NHS Brooklyn empowers families and individuals to build stronger, more stable communities.

For over 40 years, NHS Brooklyn has played a vital role in helping residents achieve housing security and economic empowerment.

Position Overview


NHS Brooklyn seeks dedicated and passionate individuals to join its Board of Directors. As a Board member, you will play a critical role in shaping the organization's strategic direction, ensuring its financial health, and helping NHS Brooklyn achieve its mission. Board members act as champions of the organization, offering expertise, time, and resources to drive its success.

RESPONSIBILITIES


Key Responsibilities


Governance & Leadership:

  • Provide strategic oversight, fiduciary governance, and accountability for the organization.

  • Support NHS Brooklyn’s mission, programs, and strategic goals.

 

Fundraising & Resource Development:

  • Actively participate in fundraising efforts, including personal contributions and leveraging your networks to identify potential donors, sponsors, and funding opportunities.

  • Support events and initiatives to drive financial sustainability.

 

Advocacy & Community Engagement:

  • Serve as an ambassador for NHS Brooklyn, raising awareness about its programs and impact.

  • Build relationships with key stakeholders, community partners, and local leaders.

 

Committees & Meetings:

  • Participate in monthly Board meetings and serve on at least one committee (e.g., Program, Development, Finance, or Governance).

  • Review organizational materials, provide input on strategic decisions, and monitor program outcomes.


QUALIFICATIONS


We are looking for individuals who bring:

  • A strong commitment to NHS Brooklyn’s mission and values.

  • Experience or expertise in one or more of the following areas:

    • Affordable housing, real estate development, or property management

    • Finance, accounting, or fundraising

    • Law, governance, or compliance

    • Marketing, communications, or public relations

    • Community development or nonprofit leadership

  • A willingness to contribute time, expertise, and financial support to NHS Brooklyn.

  • Excellent collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills.

  • A passion for serving Brooklyn’s communities and supporting economic and housing equity.

  • Previous nonprofit or Board experience is welcomed. NHS Brooklyn is committed to building a diverse and inclusive Board and strongly encourages candidates from all backgrounds to apply.

 

BOARD MEMBER EXPECTATIONS​

  • Attend monthly Board meetings and participate in committee work.

  • Commit approximately 6-10 hours per month to Board-related duties.

  • Contribute or secure an annual financial gift that is meaningful to you.

  • Actively support fundraising events, campaigns, and organizational outreach.
